The people chosen to represent the senate, are those choosing you will be in the chief justice - the chief justice being, in addition to associate justices, the ones who the president nominates to be part of the surpreme court. The surpreme court, in case you actually did not know it, is the highest so called body of all bodies taking care of legal stuff; in the US. Once "you" have been chosen, as a so called Justice, you are going to remain so, as long as you wish, possibly for your whole life (just as long as you do not behave in ways un-desired). Un-desired ways of behaving include things like doing illegal things, if you resign from your post, if you retire from working or if you die.

Actually, how many people that the surpreme court is made up of is not "set in stone", but is decided by the congress; following what is said in the constitution. When the surpreme court first came ijto exustence, the country of US wasn't as big as it has come to be, and, to follow in that increase of size, the number of people have increased, in the surpreme court.

It was mentioned, earlier, that a justice could choose to retire (being one of the ways in which the justice would "have to" leave their job). Does this happen often? Not, in fact only three people are currently alive who retired from their job as a Justice.
